Establishing the actual requirement
Catalan and Spanish both appear in Spanish administrative contexts. It would be misleading for a translation provider to give a blanket rule about when one body may require a translation. The circumstances of the file and the recipient's instructions matter. Share the communication you have received: it may specify only part of a document, a target language or a particular form of submission.
A working translation of an agreement, report or website is a different service. Catalan translation may be appropriate where no certification is required. For a contract, legal translation can address the clauses and terminology without necessarily being sworn. Establishing the real requirement avoids an unnecessary formality, cost and delay.
The relevant authorisation
Authorisation for sworn translation into and out of Catalan falls within the relevant autonomous community's arrangements, including its register of authorised professionals. It should not be described as depending exclusively on a title issued by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. For each assignment, we check the exact source and target, applicable authorisation and professional availability.

A file mixing Catalan, Spanish and a foreign language may involve more than one translation direction. Send all pages and explain what the receiving body requests. A bilingual certificate can acquire a later note in only one language. Two columns should not be assumed identical without examination.
Files and connected records
Certificates, deeds, minutes, agreements and academic documents can be assessed. Relevant content may include signatures, stamps, annexes, margins or a marked reverse side. Send the whole file so the professional can identify what is within scope. A deed with attachments cannot be estimated like a single-page certificate. Legibility and the approved source version also affect the proposal.
Flag differences in people's or organisations' names between documents. We do not quietly alter identity details to make the pieces look consistent. A better source copy or official reference may resolve an uncertainty. Translation records what the source says; correction of a source record belongs to its issuing body.
Certification and delivery
The certification form follows the professional's authorisation and applicable rules. Electronic-signature conditions established for titles under another system should not automatically be applied to an autonomous-community authorisation. Ask the recipient whether it accepts an electronic document or needs paper, copies or another presentation. We check the available form for the assignment before promising a format.

Apostille or legalisation, where relevant to a document's origin and destination, is separate from translation. For documents circulating within Spain, an international authentication should not be added as a routine step. The receiving body determines its requirements. Include any existing authentication or annex when asking for an assessment.
Preparing a request
Send the complete document, source and target languages, receiving body, purpose and deadline. Include its written instructions and say whether paper or electronic delivery is requested. Scope, subject and availability of an authorised professional determine the quotation. If it is unclear whether certification is needed, the recipient's answer helps us identify the appropriate service.
Read about sworn translation and the quality process, then use the quote form to share your file. If it is only for understanding or private negotiation, say so; a translation without official formality may meet that purpose.
Where the recipient asks about a single clause in a long record, check whether it accepts a translated extract or requires the whole document. That is the recipient's decision. Translating an isolated passage without identifying its document and surrounding provisions can deprive the reader of a reference needed to understand the clause.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Catalan document used in Madrid need sworn translation?
There is no useful blanket answer. Ask the organisation handling the file for its specific instructions. The document and procedure determine which translation, if any, is needed.
Who authorises sworn translators working with Catalan?
Autonomous-community competence and a register apply to sworn translation into and out of Catalan. Authorisation is checked for the particular language combination. It is not attributed exclusively to the state ministry.
Can a bilingual Catalan-Spanish certificate be translated?
Send both sides and the recipient's instructions. We examine differences between the versions, stamps and notes present in only one language. The scope follows what actually needs to be submitted.
Can an electronically signed Catalan sworn translation be supplied?
That depends on the authorised professional, applicable rules and recipient's acceptance. Tell us the required format. Signature arrangements under another authorisation system should not be assumed interchangeable.
Is an apostille needed for Catalan-Spanish translation?
It should not be added routinely. Apostille concerns authentication of a source document where applicable, rather than the act of translation itself. Ask the receiving body which source and formalities it requires.
